MRI
MRI is a painless medical diagnostic tool that allows the visualization of internal structures within the human body. The system uses a long tube shaped magnet and radio-waves to produce high resolution images. There is no ionizing radiation involved. The images produced provide such amazing clarity and detail that physicians are able to identify problems of the brain, spinal column, joints, organs and other tissues.
How to prepare and what
to expect:
Plan on wearing loose comfortable clothing with elastic and no zippers; doing so may prevent you from having to change into a gown. It is a good idea to remove all jewelry and any metallic objects prior to the MRI examination. The MRI Technologist will interview/screen you prior to entering the MRI suite to ensure you do not have metallic objects or other items that could interfere with the exam on your person. Please inform the MRI Technologist of any implanted devices such as pacemakers, aneurysm clips, cochlear devices or if you have had any recent surgeries (within the last 6 to 8 weeks). During the exam you will hear a loud tapping or knocking noise. To combat this distraction, patients will be offered earplugs and/or headphones to listen to music to block out the noise. In addition, you can bring your favorite CD to listen to if you like. If you are claustrophobic, please let us know this when you schedule your appointment. We may need to make arrangements in advance for a sedative to help relax and calm you if needed. If contrast dye is needed for your procedure, we will need to place an IV on the back of your hand or arm to administer this medication. Please note, there could be some discomfort at the injection site along with a cool sensation as the medication is being delivered. Normally, it will take approx 45 minutes to an hour to complete your study. However, if you physician has ordered multiple procedures or sedation your exam time will be longer. Please check with the Technologists before your procedure begins to ensure all your questions have been answered.
